Tooth brushing

For maintaining a clean and healthy mouth, we recommend tooth brushing twice a day for 2 minutes each time, once in the morning and once lastly before bed.

If you are going to brush after a meal then it is advised to wait 30 MINUTES before doing so. That way the acids from your meal are neutralised first and less tooth damage is done through brushing.

Medium/soft bristled toothbrushes are appropriate for most people.

Technique – Aim the toothbrush at 45degrees to the gum line and in a gentle, circle, massaging motion brush the teeth and gums paying attention to any grooves and gaps between your teeth.

Brush the inside, outside and tops of your teeth. Then spit out the excess toothpaste and AVOID rinsing with water.

For children under 6, parental supervision is advised to ensure all the teeth are cleaned thoroughly and your child learns good habits early.

If you are concerned you or your family aren’t brushing for long enough or effectively enough, we have specially designed chewable tablets, PlaqSearch, which highlights residual plaque and bacteria in the mouth. This will help to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Fluoride

High Oaks Dental recommend using any fluoride toothpaste you like.

Fluoride is important as fluoride replaces any calcium lost in teeth from acids in the mouth. Acids can arise from all foods and drinks.

For children <6 years – Aquafresh Little Teeth toothpaste is generally well liked by children

For children >6 years – Aquafresh Big Kids toothpaste

For children >15 years – Any adult toothpaste – samples of toothpaste are available for patients.

Diet

A healthy well-balanced diet is advised for good dental health and also for general wellbeing for the whole body.

We recommend NOT having lots of snacks between meals and sipping on fizzy drinks or sugar-rich fruit juices.

If snacks are to be eaten try following them with a neutral food such as yoghurt or cheese to help remove those acids.

Think about chewing sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva and buffer those acids!

Drinking a fizzy drink through a straw will prevent the acids attacking your teeth, preserving your enamel and white smile.
