These treatments are advised when there are missing teeth, heavily filled teeth with uneven bites, uneven colours and shapes of teeth.

This treatment was usually for older patients who had been treated over the years with heavy metal fillings where their teeth were chipping and fracturing by fatigue, the years of brushing and acid wearing their teeth.

However, with modern diets the age of patients we are seeing is decreasing to those in their 30s. There are lots more acidic products which are eroding teeth at an accelerated rate than 10-20 years ago. Erosion causes the enamel to dissolve and when this becomes too weak results in the teeth chipping and getting smaller.

If not intercepted early enough can result in the loss of teeth and reliance on dentures or implants.

Studies have shown there is around 10% of the population who grind/brux their teeth. This attritional tooth wear can flatten the teeth and remove the features which facilitates chewing resulting in patients ‘mashing’ their food like animals.

How can I slow down the wear of my teeth?

Preventative advice includes:

  • Using fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash twice a day without rinsing after.
  • Wearing a nightguard splint (if a grinder)
  • Diet modification – reduce acid intake, chew sugar-free gum to increase saliva flow to buffer the acid in the mouth.
  • Soft-medium toothbrush or an electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor to avoid aggressive brushing.
  • Reduce alcohol intake
  • If you are going to drink acidic drinks – use a straw!

Whats involved in a smile makeover?

After a full consultation with our dentist, moulds and photos of your teeth will be taken. This allows our technician to create a mock-up of your final crowns and veneers in wax.

From this is it easy to communicate how the teeth have worn and what is required to rehabilitate them to normal size and function again.

This mock-up can be placed in the mouth without any tooth removal so patients can see the final result for themselves.

Once you are happy with the mock up, we then prepare the teeth so they are ready for the new restorations to be created.

The mock up is used as temporary crowns whilst we make the final restorations.

Once made, they are bonded to your teeth individually and any adjustments made to balance your bite.

We then need you to return for your normal check –ups to ensure all the teeth remain in pristine condition and well maintained.
